Every living cell leaks real photons — a byproduct of ordinary metabolism, the same way a running engine gives off heat. In 1923 a Russian biologist claimed this light could speed up cell division in nearby tissue; it became one of the 20th century's textbook examples of "pathological science" after other labs spent fourteen years failing to replicate it. The basic phenomenon turned out to be real anyway — confirmed in the 1970s once photon-counting equipment caught up, and in 2025 researchers detected this same faint light coming from a living human brain, from outside the skull, for the first time. What isn't supported: claims that the light is coherent like a laser, or that DNA uses it to broadcast instant messages across the body — a 2015 review found no reliable evidence for either after decades of trying. One credentialed but shaky minority theory goes further still, proposing the light itself is subjective experience. Nobody has shown it does more than leak out. Nobody has ruled it out, either.
