As matter spirals into a black hole, it heats up to millions of degrees. Past a boundary called the event horizon, gravity is so strong that not even light can escape. In 1974, physicist Stephen Hawking showed that black holes leak a faint stream of radiation and slowly shrink over time. Whether anything that falls in is destroyed forever or somehow preserved was physics' biggest unsolved paradox for decades — recent theoretical work has substantially narrowed it, without yet fully settling it for a real universe like ours.
