Rotating black holes heat accreted matter to millions of degrees. At the event horizon, escape velocity exceeds the speed of light. Hawking showed in 1974 that quantum effects near the horizon produce a slow thermal radiation — causing the black hole to gradually evaporate. Whether information falling in is destroyed or re-emitted remains unresolved.
