DMT — the compound in ayahuasca — is one of the fastest, most potent psychedelics known. On it, brain rhythms destabilize, cross-cortical connectivity spikes, and close to half of users report encountering some kind of entity, usually described as a guide. A popular claim says the brain floods itself with this molecule at death — a 2026 study looking for the biological hardware that would require found essentially none of it. What's left is still striking: one receptor, activated on command, reliably producing an experience rated more real than everyday life. Whether that's manufactured from nothing, or filtering something out, isn't settled by knowing the mechanism.
