DMT — the compound in ayahuasca — is one of the fastest, most potent psychedelics known. On it, the brain's usual rhythms get sharply disrupted, and different regions that don't normally talk to each other start communicating more, and close to half of users report encountering some kind of entity, usually described as a guide. A popular claim says the brain floods itself with this molecule at death — a 2026 study looking for the biological hardware that would require found essentially none of it. What's left is still striking: one receptor, activated on command, reliably producing an experience rated more real than everyday life. Whether that's manufactured from nothing, or filtering something out, isn't settled by knowing the mechanism.
