Around 10–20% of cardiac arrest survivors report a near-death experience including a tunnel, bright light, and a sense of return. Proposed mechanisms include cerebral hypoxia, REM intrusion, and endogenous neurotransmitter release. The experience is documented across cultures independently of prior belief.
