The holographic principle says that all the information inside any region of space could be stored on its outer surface, not spread through its volume — like how a hologram stores a 3D image on a flat piece of film. The idea grew out of studying black holes, and physicists 't Hooft and Susskind later extended it into a bigger claim: maybe the 3D world we experience is really a projection of information written on a distant boundary. The precise math behind this has only been proven for a differently-curved kind of space than our own universe — stretching it to a universe shaped like ours is real, ongoing physics, not yet a settled result.
This doesn't prove that consciousness is fundamental — it's really a claim about information, not about the mind. But it does chip away at the idea that solid, local, 3D matter is the bedrock of reality: if a flat boundary can fully determine what happens in the volume above it, information may run deeper than "stuff." It's one more crack in the same wall this site keeps circling, alongside the double slit, entanglement, and the hard problem of consciousness — not proof of anything, just one more reason to stay curious.
