An electron and a top quark should, by the bare equations, both be massless — nothing in the math explains why either one weighs anything, let alone different amounts. A field proposed in 1964, confirmed at CERN in 2012, answers that: particles that interact with it more strongly behave as though they have more mass. That's genuinely solid, Nobel-winning physics. What isn't solid: the field's popular nickname, "the God particle" — coined by a publisher, not by physicists, over Peter Higgs's own objections — and the claims built on it, that this pervasive field is some kind of universal consciousness. A field can fill all of space without being a mind.
