lucid dreaming

asleep · aware · answering
During REM sleep the body is paralyzed — except the eyes. In 1981, trained dreamers used that one open channel to signal, from inside a dream, the exact moment they realized they were dreaming, verified in real time against unambiguous REM-sleep EEG. In a 2021 study, researchers pushed this further: asking sleeping, dreaming people new questions live, and getting correct answers back through eye movements and small facial twitches — in multiple independent labs. The brain data says this isn't ordinary waking consciousness relocated: lucid REM keeps ordinary dreaming's signature almost intact, while adding a specific, frontal burst of high-frequency activity that a precisely tuned electrical current can reliably switch on from outside.
